Afghanistan suffers from a problem similar to Russia's: the resource curse. Ordinarily, agriculture doesn't fall under the category of natural resources, because the land has to be worked. However, a black market creates excess profit--same as with natural resources, the only question is who will get it. The only answer is: the strongest, most violent, and most ruthless.
